Passwords Had a Good Run. Say Hello to Passkeys.

Remember the last time you got stuck in the “forgot password” doom loop? You request a reset, wait for the email, click the link, invent yet another password with a capital letter, a number, and a hieroglyph, and then promptly forget it by next Tuesday. We’ve all been there.
Here’s the good news: that whole ritual is on its way out. Meet the passkey. And if you’re using an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you already have everything you need to start using them today.
A while back we made the case for turning on multi-factor authentication (and we still mean it, pretty please). Passkeys are the next step in that same journey: even simpler, and even harder for the bad guys to crack.
So… What Exactly Is a Passkey?
A passkey is a modern replacement for your password. Instead of a string of characters you have to remember (and type, and reset, and remember again), a passkey lives securely on your device and unlocks with something you already use a hundred times a day: your face, your fingerprint, or your device passcode.
Behind the scenes, your device creates two mathematically linked “keys.” One stays locked away on your iPhone or Mac and never leaves. The other lives with the website. When you log in, the two shake hands. No password to type, nothing to steal.
Why Passkeys Beat Passwords (It’s Not Even Close)
- Nothing to remember. No more sticky notes, no more password journal in a desk drawer.
- Phishing-proof. A passkey only works on the real website it was created for. If a scammer sends you a fake login page, your passkey simply won’t play along, because it knows the difference even when you don’t.
- Nothing to steal. There’s no password sitting in a company’s database waiting to leak in the next big breach. Even if a website gets hacked, there’s nothing there to give away your account.
- Faster. A glance or a fingertip, and you’re in.
The Apple Advantage
If your household or office runs on Apple gear, you’re in luck. This is where passkeys really shine. Face ID and Touch ID become your login. And thanks to iCloud Keychain, a passkey you create on your iPhone is instantly ready on your iPad and Mac, too. Make it once, use it everywhere.
“But What If I Lose My iPhone?”
Great question, and a common worry. Because your passkeys sync securely through iCloud Keychain, they aren’t trapped on a single device. Get a new iPhone, sign into iCloud, and your passkeys come right along with you. (This, by the way, is one more reason to make sure your Apple Account itself is locked down with a strong password and MFA. The keys to the kingdom deserve a good lock.)
How to Start Using Passkeys Today
You don’t have to convert your whole digital life overnight. Start small:
- Update your devices. Passkeys work best on recent versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, so make sure you’re current.
- Pick one account. Next time you log into a site that offers it (Google, Amazon, PayPal, and many others do), look for an option like “Create a passkey” or “Set up passwordless sign-in.”
- Follow the prompt. Your device will ask for Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. That’s it. You just made a passkey.
- Repeat as you go. Each time a site offers a passkey, take them up on it. Before long, your riskiest logins will be your safest ones.
The Bottom Line
Passwords served us well for a few decades, but they were never really built for the world we live in now. Passkeys are easier for you and a nightmare for scammers, which is exactly the trade we like to see.
At TechConcierge, we’re big believers in security that doesn’t make your life harder. If you’d like a hand setting up passkeys across your family’s or your business’s Apple devices, or you just want someone to make sure everything’s locked down properly, that’s exactly what we’re here for. Give us a shout.
